Our managing director, Mike Bowers, has been nominated for the Mitsubishi Motors Volunteer of the Year Awards for his work as a rugby volunteer in the North East and his dedication to the game.

The awards are part of the Mitsubishi Motors Volunteer Recognition Programme which provides grassroots rugby clubs and the rugby community with opportunities to recognise and reward the volunteers who make up such an integral part of the game.

Mike, from Gosforth, Newcastle, has been a volunteer rugby coach in the North East for more than 25 years. He coaches Northern Colts, the under-18s team of Northern FC, in addition to Northern RFC’s under-13s team. He holds training sessions with the teams on two nights per week, plus on a Saturday and Sunday and dedicates more than 200 hours per year to the club, in addition to running a growing business.

Mike, who started coaching at Gosforth RFC – where he played from 1981 to 1997 – also coaches at under-16 level for Northumberland RFU. He was first appointed as a head coach in 1992 at Gosforth RFC and has since coached various age groups across the North East.

His coaching work includes creating training programmes for the teams he works with. Mike also helps to organise rugby tours for Northern which take place both in the UK and abroad: he has done this for the last five years.

Mike is one of a select group of rugby volunteers in the area who is invited to attend an awards event held at Blackshaws Mitsubishi in Morpeth on June 8. At this event, one volunteer will be announced as a Volunteer of the Year finalist – earning them a place at the Mitsubishi Motors Volunteer of the Year Awards night at Twickenham Stadium on Friday September 7, 2018. Three overall winners will be announced on the evening and each one will receive a Mitsubishi car for a year as a thank you for their continued support of the game.

As well as the Mitsubishi Motors Volunteer of the Year Awards, the programme offers a number of opportunities to say thank you to the thousands of volunteers who give back to grassroots rugby, week in, week out.

Commenting on his nomination, Mike Bowers said: “It’s a real honour to have been nominated for the Mitsubishi Motors Volunteer of the Year Awards. I have a real passion for rugby and believe that it’s vitally important to help young people empower and express themselves through sport. Rugby’s unique ‘Core Values’ enable coaches to instil character building values in the kids as they grow into adults, teaching them Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship, all of which I see daily playing out as they grow not just in body but mind.

“Playing rugby was a key part of my life as a youngster and I enjoy sharing my knowledge and enthusiasm for the game with young players, as well as making a contribution to the grassroots development of the sport in the North East.

“It’s fantastic that Mitsubishi is recognising the work of volunteers both in the North East and across the UK and I am very proud to have been put forward for an award.”

As a business, Cellular Solutions is dedicated to supporting sport in the North East. We are the official shirt sponsor of Northern Colts, Northern FC’s under-18s team and Gosforth RFC’s first team. We also sponsor tour shirts and hoodies for Northern RFC, Dame Allan’s and RGS schools, as well having sponsored Northumberland County under-16 hoodies for the last four years.

Our support of North East rugby also extends to supporting the Newcastle Falcons Foundation, which uses rugby to increase social inclusion, improve health and inspire young people.
