Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 & Z Fold 5

Posted on 03rd August 2023 at 15:42

Samsung has once again raised the bar with the unveiling of its next-generation foldable phones, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5. These innovative devices follow closely in the footsteps of their predecessors, the Flip 4 and Fold 4, offering users a choice between two distinct designs – folding horizontally or flipping vertically.

The Flip 5 offers either 256GB or 512GB of storage, with 8GB of RAM. The Z Fold 5, on the other hand, comes with either 256GB, 512GB, or a whopping 1TB of storage, plus 12GB of RAM. Both devices are powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy processor, which launched alongside the Galaxy S23 series.

When it comes to size and design, the Z Flip 5 measures just 3.35 by 2.83 by 0.59 inches when folded, expanding to 6.50 by 2.83 by 0.27 inches when unfolded. The Z Fold 5, in contrast, is almost as big folded as the Z Flip 5 is unfolded, and expands to 6.10 by 5.11 by 0.24 inches when opened. Both devices use Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 for the outer screens and back panels, and carry an IPX8 water-resistance rating, demonstrating their durability.

The screen size of the two phones directly corresponds to the amount of screen real estate they offer. The main screen on the Z Flip 5 is a 6.7-inch, 22:9 panel with a resolution of 2,640 by 1,080 pixels, while the Z Fold 5’s 7.6-inch main screen has a 21.6:18 aspect ratio and a resolution of 2,176 by 1,812 pixels. Both main screens are Dynamic AMOLED 2X panels with 120Hz adaptive refresh rates for smooth scrolling.

The camera capabilities of the two phones also differ significantly. The Galaxy Z Fold 5 boasts a triple-camera stack, including a 50MP f/1.8 wide-angle sensor, a 12MP f/2.2 ultra-wide sensor, and a 10MP f/2.4 telephoto lens. The Z Flip 5’s camera stack is more modest, with two rear-facing 12MP sensors.

In terms of battery and charging, both the Galaxy Z Flip 5’s 3,700mAh battery and the Fold 5’s 4,400mAh cell support 25W wired charging, 15W wireless charging, and offer reverse wireless charging.

Both the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5 offer unique features and capabilities, making them a worthy consideration for anyone in the market for a new smartphone.
